What should I do before my first class?
Hygiene is the number one priority, Making skin to skin contact is inevitable, there is a lot of close quarters breathing on one another. For this reason it is critically important that you do a few things:
- Keep your fingernails and toenails trimmed to protect yourself and others from cuts
- Shower prior to training
- Don't come to training if you are feeling sick
- Brush your teeth or chew gum
- Make sure your training gear is washed and completely dry
- Ensure that you are hydrated
Jiu Jitsu is physically demanding, it is a combination of strength training and cardio so it's important to prioritize your health on and off the mat.
What should I bring to my first class?
Come 10 Minutes early so you can meet the staff and instructors, sign a waiver if you haven't previously, and get to know some of the other students in class.
Bringing some flip flops, crocs, or sandals is a smart choice for footwear. The mats must be walked on without shoes. Flip-flops are therefore a terrific idea to wear as you approach the mats for a smooth changeover.
Bring your own gi if you have one. We have a couple of clean loaner gis that you can wear during training and return at the end. We also have gis for purchase.
Rashguards and shorts should be worn for a no-gi class.
Don't forget to bring a water bottle. You can refill your bottle using the water cooler.
What is a Gi?
In order to practice jiu-jitsu and other martial arts, such as judo, karate, and sambo, one must wear a gi. The Japanese word "Keikogi" or "Judogi" is the source of the English word "gi".
Gi refers to clothing, while keiko denotes practice. The gi jacket, gi pants, and gi belt make up a gi.
During training, various gi components are used tactically for grips, chokes, guarding, and other techniques. It is often composed of cotton and firmly sewn to endure the demands of everyday practice.
Please be sure to wash your gi before every training session.
